Optimizing CMS build infrastructure via Apache Mesos
The Offline Software of the CMS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
at CERN consists of 6M lines of in-house code, developed over a decade by
nearly 1000 physicists, as well as a comparable amount of general use
open-source code. A critical ingredient to the success of the construction and
early operation of the WLCG was the convergence, around the year 2000, on the
use of a homogeneous environment of commodity x86-64 processors and Linux.
Apache Mesos is a cluster manager that provides efficient resource isolation
and sharing across distributed applications, or frameworks. It can run Hadoop,
Jenkins, Spark, Aurora, and other applications on a dynamically shared pool of
nodes. We present how we migrated our continuos integration system to schedule
jobs on a relatively small Apache Mesos enabled cluster and how this resulted
in better resource usage, higher peak performance and lower latency thanks to
the dynamic scheduling capabilities of Mesos.Comment: Submitted to proceedings of the 21st International Conference on

IGUANA Architecture, Framework and Toolkit for Interactive Graphics
IGUANA is a generic interactive visualisation framework based on a C++
component model. It provides powerful user interface and visualisation
primitives in a way that is not tied to any particular physics experiment or
detector design. The article describes interactive visualisation tools built
using IGUANA for the CMS and D0 experiments, as well as generic GEANT4 and
GEANT3 applications. It covers features of the graphical user interfaces, 3D
and 2D graphics, high-quality vector graphics output for print media, various
textual, tabular and hierarchical data views, and integration with the
application through control panels, a command line and different

Grid Data Management in Action: Experience in Running and Supporting Data Management Services in the EU DataGrid Project
In the first phase of the EU DataGrid (EDG) project, a Data Management System
has been implemented and provided for deployment. The components of the current
EDG Testbed are: a prototype of a Replica Manager Service built around the
basic services provided by Globus, a centralised Replica Catalogue to store
information about physical locations of files, and the Grid Data Mirroring
Package (GDMP) that is widely used in various HEP collaborations in Europe and
the US for data mirroring. During this year these services have been refined
and made more robust so that they are fit to be used in a pre-production
environment. Application users have been using this first release of the Data
Management Services for more than a year. In the paper we present the
components and their interaction, our implementation and experience as well as
the feedback received from our user communities. We have resolved not only
issues regarding integration with other EDG service components but also many of
the interoperability issues with components of our partner projects in Europe
and the U.S. The paper concludes with the basic lessons learned during this
operation. These conclusions provide the motivation for the architecture of the
next generation of Data Management Services that will be deployed in EDG during

Process Matching: Performance Trade-Off Between Summary and Full-Length Descriptions
Business process models are used by modeling experts to concisely depict the workflow of an organization that plays a pivotal role in the development of ERP systems. A growing number of organizations also maintain the textual process descriptions of these process models as the descriptions are understandable across the board. A recent study has revealed that these textual descriptions can also be used for an accurate process model search. However, the use of textual descriptions is a resource-intensive task due to the sheer size of the descriptions. To that end, in this paper, we have proposed an approach that relies on the use of summary textual descriptions, instead of full-length descriptions, to enhance the performance of process matching. To evaluate the proposed approach, we have used four diverse text summarization techniques, including a state-of-the-art deep learning based technique, for generating summary descriptions, and seven text-matching techniques for finding relevant process specifications. Our empirical study has established that the Vector Space Model is the most effective technique for process matching. Furthermore, the use of Lingo generated summaries, at a compression rate of 50 %, can achieve a higher efficiency as well as effectiveness than the full-length textual process descriptions
Explorations of the viability of ARM and Xeon Phi for physics processing
We report on our investigations into the viability of the ARM processor and
the Intel Xeon Phi co-processor for scientific computing. We describe our
experience porting software to these processors and running benchmarks using
real physics applications to explore the potential of these processors for

CMS Partial Releases: Model, Tools, and Applications. Online and Framework-Light Releases
The CMS Software project CMSSW embraces more than a thousand packages organized in subsystems for analysis, event display, reconstruction, simulation, detector description, data formats, framework, utilities and tools. The release integration process is highly automated by using tools developed or adopted by CMS. Packaging in rpm format is a built-in step in the software build process. For several well-defined applications it is highly desirable to have only a subset of the CMSSW full package bundle. For example, High Level Trigger algorithms that run on the Online farm, and need to be rebuilt in a special way, require no simulation, event display, or analysis packages. Physics analysis applications in Root environment require only a few core libraries and the description of CMS specific data formats. We present a model of CMS Partial Releases, used for preparation of the customized CMS software builds, including description of the tools used, the implementation, and how we deal with technical challenges, such as resolving dependencies and meeting special requirements for concrete applications in a highly automated fashion
Gut Microbiome: A New Organ System in Body
The gut microbiome is comprised of various types of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses naturally occurring in humans and animals as normal microflora. Gut microorganisms are typically host specific, and their number and type vary according to different host species and environment. Gut microbes contribute directly and/or indirectly to various physiological processes including immune modulation, regulation of various neurotransmitter, and hormones, as well as production of many antioxidants and metabolites. They also play a role as antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-carcinogenic agents. Moreover, the ability of gut microbes to attenuate various systemic diseases like coronary heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, metabolic diseases like diabetes mellitus, and infectious diseases like diarrhea has recently been reported. Current research findings have enough evidence to suggest that gut microbiome is a new organ system mainly due to the microorganisms’ specific biochemical interaction with their hosts and their systemic integration into the host biology. Investigations into the potential ability of gut microbiome to influence metabolism inside their host via biochemical interaction with antibiotics and other drugs has recently been initiated.
